Freedom isn't free

Voltaire- 'I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it'

Just a friendly reminder.

A military tribunal has determined that two Gitmo inmates are innocent, but they won't release them to their native China where they will face prosecution, and they don't want to release them in the states. Why is this story buried? It's not getting the kind of press the Aruba girl, or Brad and Jennifer got.

If we are not on the side of justice, what are we doing? Wrongful imprisonment is something we should be very concerned about. Especially in light of recent death sentences that have been over-turned as a result of DNA evidence, and those are cases where the accused were actually given due process.

Are we really more concerned with justice for Jennifer Aniston, than justice for innocents who have been imprisoned for a few years?

I think I know the answer.

The conondrum in this case is actually more common than you think.

Even if these dudes weren't Gitmo prisoners, they'd likely find themselves marooned in a federal lock up in the U.S.

If we don't have an extradition policy with a certain country, and a person from that country finds himself on our soil for whatever reason, we can't send them back under federal immigration law. And they can't be allowed out of lock up to wander around in the U.S. --- especially when it's U.S. Military Base.

You wouldn't believe how many people come here illegally from hellish locals like the Ivory Coast, get denied residency, so they sit in jail because we won't take them and we can't send them back either --- not that they'd want to go back most of the time since they're usually running from a lawless or brutal nation.
